What is Shatter?
Cannabis Shatter is a type of cannabis concentrate known for its glass-like consistency and high potency. It is typically made by extracting cannabinoids and terpenes from cannabis using solvents like butane (in BHO, or Butane Hash Oil extraction). The resulting extract is processed into a hard, brittle substance that shatters easily, where it gets its name.
Shatter has a high THC content, often ranging from 60% to 90%, making it a very potent option for experienced users. Due to its purity and concentration, shatter is used for dabbing, where small amounts are vaporized using a dab rig, producing a clean, potent vapour that provides intense effects quickly.
Key characteristics of shatter include:
- Appearance: Shatter is typically golden or amber and has a glassy, translucent texture. It is fragile and can break into pieces like glass, which makes it easy to handle in small doses.

History of Shatter
Shatter, like Budder, are both relatively new forms of Cannabis concentrate. They both trace their lineage back to the original methods of producing hash. However, most modern processes were developed in the late 90’s. It was then that Shatter was first created and marketed. It was introduced by the same inventor of Budder, Canadian Cannabis Concentrator BudderKing, and became available in dispensaries in 2003.
Within a few short years, the methods of producing Shatter were published in Cannabis Culture Magazine. This brought Shatter instant widespread fame. By 2010, it had become a household name amongst Cannabis Concentrate users.
