What is Cannabis?

Cannabis, or Marijuana, is a genus of psychoactive plant in the Cannabaceae family. It has been used the world over in various forms for thousands of years. In fact, as far back as the Neolithic Age, Cannabis was cultivated into ropes and fabrics. It is unclear when it was first used for medical purposes, however, historians have found archeological evidence of Cannabis being used by the Romanians as far back as 3500 BCE.

Different types of Cannabis

Sativa

Sativa Strains are generally more associated with their cerebral properties. Because of their low CBD to THC ratio, the effects of these strains are much more mental than physical. The high limonene and pinene terpene profiles don’t just give Sativa’s their signature scent, they also promote an uplifting and euphoric Cannabis experience.

Indica

Indica Strains are generally more associated with relaxation and relief than Sativa’s or Hybrid’s. They typically have a higher CDB to THC ratio than their Sativa counterparts, making them ideal for medicinal purposes. Additionally, Indica’s usually contain a high myrcene terpene profile, which aids in rest and relaxation. As a result, Indica’s are typically considered an evening strain.

Hybrid

A Hybrid strain refers to any combination of Sativa or Indica Strains. These strains offer a more balanced Cannabis experience. By combining the invigorating and energizing effects of a Sativa with the pain-relieving and muscle-relaxing effects of an Indica, these strains offer the best of both worlds.

CBD

CBD Strains are just like any other Cannabis strains, however, they are low in THC. The ratio of CBD to THC plays an important part in the effects Cannabis can have on its users. These strains offer relief from symptoms like pain and inflammation without the heavy psychoactive effects.

How does Cannabis work?

Cannabinoids

The primary active ingredients in Cannabis are called Cannabinoids, and there are dozens of them contained in each plant. These Cannabinoids react directly with the human immune system to help provide relief and restore balance. In fact, scientists and researchers still haven’t defined all of their effects. They have however clearly defined the main two types of Cannabinoid; THC and CBD, as well as a few of the less common varieties.

THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main psychoactive compound found in the Cannabis plant. It is responsible for the euphoria and improved mood associated with Cannabis use.

CBD or Cannabidiol, is a non psychoactive agent that provides excellent pain relief. CBD can be extracted and used to fight pain without the euphoria associated with THC. Because of these effects, CBD has become an increasingly popular form of medication.

CBG or Cannabigerol, is an extremely cerebral Cannabinoid. It is commonly used to help reduce feelings of anxiety. As a result, it has become an effective treatment for symptoms of depression, OCD and PTSD.

CBN or Cannabinol, is similar to CBG also has strong medicinal effects, but lends more towards the physical than the cerebral.  It is commonly used to ease muscle stiffness and, as a result, can drastically reduce symptoms of epilepsy and seizures.

THCA or Tetrahydrocannabinol Acid, is extremely similar to THC but doesn’t contain the same psychoactive properties. It is an excellent anti-inflammatory and is commonly used to fight the effects of Parkinson’s disease and ALS.

Terpenes

The Secondary active ingredients in Cannabis is Terpenes. Terpenes were originally thought to only control the smell of Cannabis, but further research has concluded that they also influence the effects of the Cannabinoids in the strain as well. There are 10 main Terpenes found in Cannabis.

Bisabolol for reducing pain and inflammation. With notes of chamomile and tea tree.

Caryophyllene for reducing anxiety and fighting depression. With notes of pepper and spice.

Eucalyptol is both refreshing and invigorating. With notes of eucalyptus and tea tree.

Humulene for reducing inflammation. With earthy notes of hops and clove.

Limonene for improving mood and reducing stress. With bright and sweet citrus notes.

Linalool for improving relaxation and mood. With light floral notes.

Myrcene, the most common Terpene, with heavy relaxing effects and earthy herbal notes.

Ocimene for warding off bacteria and viral infection. With notes of mango, basil and parsley.

Pinene to help reduce pain and boost cognitive function. With strong notes of pine.

And Finally, Terpinolene for sedation and antibacterial purposes. With notes of apple, cumin and conifer.
